Fresh Trash makes an 'IMPACT'
ImageThe journey began on Monday, May 5th when members of Fresh Trash, accompanied by five Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton and Franklin Counties staff and a parent chaperone left for San Francisco, CA for an incredible week. Fresh Trash was selected to perform at the 102nd Annual Conference of Boys & Girls Club Professionals and spent the last month rehearsing and preparing for the big adventure. Upon learning of their selection during the first week of April, a new piece of music was composed - IMPACT! - which gave a nod to the theme of the Conference: Impact 2012, the Next Five Years. Performances on KVEW TV's Good Morning Northwest and at Raise-a-Racquet, a Boys & Girls Club fundraiser gave Fresh Trash opportunities to perform their new material before leaving.

Image Thanks to financial support from Boys & Girls Clubs of America and generous local donors, all expenses for the members including airfare, hotel and meals were covered in addition to some sightseeing trips. The five members from the MAC enjoyed Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown and trekking across town to different restaurants and neighborhoods getting an excellent opportunity to see life upclose. The youth - Libby Sturges and Daniel Schmitt of Richland, Jared Hess of Kennewick, Seth Shelton of Finley and CJ Peiffer of Pasco have been performing together for more than two years which showed through their professional demeanor during rehearsals.

Image With new uniforms, professional lighting and an unbelievable stage to work on, Fresh Trash gave the performance of a lifetime Friday night while opening the Conference Finale dinner in front of more than 2,800 individuals. Even after a busy week of sightseeing and long rehearsals Fresh Trash maintained their strong energy and electrified the audience, earning strong applause even while still playing and an immediate standing ovation at the conclusion.

MAC Members Make Big Impression
ImageThe Columbia Center Rotary Branch, Music & Arts Center has recently received the results from the Pacific Region Fine Arts Festival in Laguna Beach, CA. The Festival was held to choose 11 entries from each of three age groups and one group project from over 230 entries for each category to go on to the National Fine Arts Exhibit (NFAE), a program ran by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Out of the potential 34 entries, the MAC had three projects created by members to move to the next level, meaning that our members will make up 10% of the entries forwarded to the NFAE.

ImageThis is an amazing accomplishment for any single Club and speaks to the high level of artistic talent which has been developed under the instruction of Art Coordinator Jessie Cluck. It is also the second year in a row in which the Columbia Center Rotary Branch, Music & Arts Center has had artwork chosen to represent the 11 western states which make up the Pacific Region of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In 2007, Abby Cole of Kennewick had her piece selected and it spent several months at different locations on display all across the country.

ImageAll members who participated in the process this Fall are winners and we are proud of the works of art they have created. Earning entry into this year's NFAE are (from top image to bottom) Sarah Bosserman - Age 15 - Multicolor - "Alice", from Richland; Abby Cole - Age 11 - Monochromatic - "Penguin" from Kennewick and; Jimmy Christensen - Age 8 - Collage - "Fashion" from Pasco. Each of the Tri-Cities were represented and Club Staff are excited about the possibilities for next year.

2008 Torch Club Officers
Even though elections were held a week late because of weather closures voter turn-out was incredible for the 2008 Torch Club elections. Candidates were responsible for making their own signs and writing a speech which they delivered to two full-club meetings to make sure all MAC members had an opportunity to become informed.

Image Elected to serve as the 2008 Torch Club Officers are (pictured counter-clockwise from first row center) Eddie C. - President, Mack A. - Vice President of Procedures, Joey M. - Vice President of Pride, Abbey A. - Treasurer and Abby C. - Secretary.

Torch Club is a leadership club, similar to an ASB in the schools. Each year Torch Club members volunteer hundreds of hours in the community, from Downtown Clean-up projects to helping get snack out at the Club. Last year our Torch Club raised more than $200 for another Boys & Girls Club in Washington State whose Club had burned down. This year our Torch Club will take on an even larger role in Club operations, helping to organize and implement our first Soccer League.

A Commitment to Quality

Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe and positive place staffed by adult professionals who facilitate over 100 hours per week of enriching programs for school aged youth. All programs conducted provide skills in the areas of leadership, sportsmanship, arts and crafts, social recreation, healthy life skills, tutoring, and physical education. All activities incorporate the youth development strategy, which foster a sense of competence and usefulness in children thereby challenging them to reach their optimum potential as adults.

A History of Commitment

The Boys & Girls Club of Benton and Franklin Counties is a part of a national affiliation of over 3000 Clubs across the country. Though Boys & Girls Clubs have been in existence for over 140 years and serve over three million youth, our local Club has been providing services in the Tri-Cities for just ten years. In that time, Clubs have seen exponential growth and have eight operating sites in the Tri Cities and serve nearly 500 youth per night with a total membership of over 2800 youth.
